EPIDIAN® DECO combined with HARDENER DECO or DECO K is an epoxy composition designed to create unique, exclusive pieces of furniture and other elements of interior design.
- create furniture and decorations based on wood and resin composition
- coat wooden surfaces
- create epoxy river decorative tabletops
- fill in defects in wood
- create jewelry and other artistic elements.
We’d like to tackle some of the frequently asked questions regarding EPIDIAN® DECO based composition. If you have a question or a request, please e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will be happy to answer in one of our future newsletters or during our upcoming webinar.
1. HOW SHOULD I DEAERATE THE COMPOSITION?
The most important step is the mixing process. Suitable mixers and appropriate mixing speed substantially reduce aeration of the resin. To deaerate the surface (not the mass) use hot air e.g. an electric heat gun or a gas burner but be extra careful to avoid speedy, uneven hardening of the resin.
First deaeration may be carried out approx. 5 minutes after application, the second attempt if necessary, no later than after 15 minutes. If the resin is not hardening under the influence of hot air, you should stop deaeration.
2. HOW SHOULD EPIDIAN® DECO BE MIXED? WHAT MIXERS SHOULD I USE?
We highly recommend the hex head mixer for resins and paints. Mixing speed should not exceed 300-400 rpm.
3. SHOULD THE WOOD BE PEELED BEFORE USE?
Yes, as the tree bark is highly porous and applying the resin to unpeeled wood may cause aeration and bad adhesion.
4. HOW THICK CAN A LAYER OF EPIDIAN® DECO WITH HARDENER DECO K BE? MAY MULTIPLE LAYERS BE MERGED?
It is important to remember that the exothermic process is defined by the mass of the composition. We highly suggest that you read the Technical Information carefully before using any epoxy resin. For EPIDAN® DECO used with HARDENER DECO K the recommended maximum thickness is 4 cm for 9 cm of width and 1m of length, while thickness and length are the most important parameters.
The layers may be merged but each next one may only be applied when the previous layer is not sticky any more, but at the same time not fully hardened yet.
5. WHAT COLORANTS MAY BE USED WITH EPIDIAN® DECO?
You should only use dedicated colorants, preferably the liquid ones. Inappropriate colorants may affect the resin’s cross linking process – either speed it up or slow it down, cause discoloration while hardening or affect the quality of hardened resin in a negative way.
CIECH Resins portfolio will soon contain a selection of colorants for epoxy resins.
